‘The WeekendPlanners’, i.e. our summer class of 2015

We have this crazy habit of making apps that we need, and can’t find in the form we want. Actually, this is how our own products see the light of day.

This year’s obsession is about making the most of our weekends. Yes, we are young and restless, and instead of just chillin’ nicely at the end of our week, we have to have that planned out too. And no, we are not suffering from the FOMO syndrome, we just want to be as rich as possible…in experiences. Cause that’s what makes life awesome, isn’t it?

So, over the course of our 6-week-long internship program, our interns have played a major part in turning this “obsession” into reality. Coming from the UBB, UTC and the Art and Design Academy, they brought their diverse experience and skills to the table, and we couldn’t have been more excited about the wonderful team we’ve put together.

So, let’s meet them!

What’s your favourite app and why?

Briefcase Pro. Because it lets you store various file types in your iPhone. iOS doesn’t have a user accessible file system, so this app is very helpful.

Razvan: Android Intern

Likes: drawing, reading, creating videogames

Dislikes: softwares without autosave option, slow internet, noisy computers

What’s your favourite app and why?

It is pretty hard to pick one app because it is a field that changes very rapidly, but one feature of the Google app that I find very interesting and helpful is Google Now. It is very suitable for a mobile device because it transforms your phone in a AI assistant that can help you plan your day, take notes, make calls, get the latest news, weather forecast, or just look up some information on the web for you. It is very practical and it makes the user experience much more interactive.

Why did you choose Halcyon Mobile for your internship?

I wanted to learn more about mobile app development, and I wanted to learn from the best. That’s why I chose Halcyon Mobile, because they not only have experience in this field, but they are also very good at it.

What was your first impression of the company?

A hard-working team, very friendly and helpful.

What did you like the most about interning here?

The fact that our work was constantly being reviewed by someone and we got useful feedback.

What was the biggest challenge you encountered during these 6 weeks?

The biggest challenge was adapting to the less known technologies that we had to use.

Favorite movie of all times?

Don’t know if I have a favorite one, but a movie that I found very intriguing was “Google and the World Brain”. It is a documentary about Google Books Library Project and its implications. It not only talks about the copyright controversy, but also explores the implications that the digital era has over the world’s knowledge.

What’s your favourite app and why?

Mailbox – it’s the most simple mail box client I’ve ever used.

Why did you choose Halcyon Mobile for your internship?

Because they were the only mobile development company from Cluj-Napoca that focused on building consumer apps.

What did a typical day in the office look like for you?

First tea, then planning with the team and then coding. After that, at about 1 o’clock, eat, relax in the hammock, code again and finally gather conclusions for that day.

I liked the professionalism and the tools they used. Also loved the view they have outside, and that they have a tennis court.

Google Now, mainly because it manages to merge great innovation and beautiful design in an application, which helps me throughout the day, giving relevant information that I can understand at just a glance.

Why did you choose Halcyon Mobile for your internship?

This company made some really great apps, like Dollarbird and MimeChat. I know that at Halcyon Mobile I could find top of the league mobile developers and designers, in an enjoyable, young atmosphere, so I decided to apply here.

What did you like the most about interning here?

I liked the working process the most, with all its teamwork, meetings, CR-s and challenges that kept me motivated through the whole internship.

Are there days in Halcyon Mobile’s life when during work, out of the blue, yummy cakes and drinks appear in the office? What was your first thought when you saw them piling up?

At first I thought someone had a birthday or something, but when champagne started to appear I knew that it is something much more than that.

What did you learn during this internship?

Besides improving my communication, and team-work skills, I was also able to learn so many things about Android and mobile development in general. I can see really big improvement in my code quality too.

Arni: Android Intern

Describe yourself in a sentence.

My all time favourite app is Waze. I like to drive a lot and it helps me drive safely, without being caught by the cops.

What was your first impression of the company?

My first impression was a bit weird, like everyone was sitting at their desks casually, working on stuff, seeing people going into the kitchen barefoot. It was like not really a working place, but rather a place to have fun and make some great apps in the meantime.

What did a typical day in the office look like for you?

A typical day was coming in for work, drinking a coffee, meeting with our tutor and talking about the completed tasks and the ones still remaining, start coding, random birthday celebrations, eating a great lunch with the other interns, back to coding, getting help from the mentors, heading home if you’re done for the day.

What did you learn during this internship?

I finally managed not to oversleep in the mornings. More importantly, I’ve learnt how to work in a team, and write clean code. I also got the hang of grilling a good hamburger (thanks to Enikő).

Favourite movie of all time?

The Godfather. The way the whole film develops and the acting makes me shiver. I watched it a dozen times, and still can’t get enough of it.

Tell us one word that would describe best your overall experience at Halcyon Mobile.

GAttila: Evolve.

Razvan: Cool.

Janka: Icons.

Adrian: Awesome.

BAttila: AWESOME.

Walter: Teamwork.

Arni: Cool.

Android or iOS? (what platform did you choose and why)

GAttila: iOS. I like Apple products because of their design and software. I wanted to learn the process for creating applications for the iPhone.

Razvan: I would always pick Android, because I like to customize my phone, change the style of the UI and add new widgets that notify me about different stuff; and also upgrade the phone’s memory when needed.

Janka: iOS, because I like how clean the UI looks.

Adrian: I choose iOS because it’s the platform I want to develop for, and because it’s so easy to use.

BAttila: Android, mainly because I like and use Google products daily, and I really like to customize my phone to best match my daily needs. And one more thing, development on Android is not bound to one OS only.

Walter: iOS. I applied to this company a bit later, and this was the only position left 😛

Arni: I chose Android because I found it to be more challenging.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of applying to an internship at Halcyon Mobile?

GAttila: Don’t hesitate, if you want to learn programming for smartphones, they are the best! You will work in a nice office with friendly people and you will get help from them. Don’t forget about the free coffee and tea!

Razvan: If you are on a path of becoming a mobile app developer or designer, Halcyon Mobile is the perfect place to start. Not only will you find well prepared people in the field, but also a friendly environment that will help you improve your skills, and also teaches you what teamwork really means.

Adrian: If you plan to apply for an internship at Halcyon Mobile you should be a passionate person towards building mobile apps and also be a very calm person.

BAttila: First and foremost prepare yourself for the most awesome internship that ever existed! Secondly, do not hesitate, just ask if you get stuck on something!

Walter: I highly recommend interning here, because one will not leave ‘empty handed’ in terms of knowledge.

Arni: Don’t waste your time and apply, you won’t regret it.

Janka: You definitely have to take part at the Happy Friday gathering!

Thank you all, again, for your hard work this summer! We hope you had a great experience, and walked away inspired, motivated, and one step closer to building amazing mobile products.

And, of course, we welcome those of you who would like a similar experience. You can apply by emailing us at hello@halcyonmobile.com!
